The first book that an author completes is special. I feel a strong bond to the characters, as if I know them personally. It's like a creative baby that your imagination willed to life.
I certainly feel a closeness to my book. But, Dark Touch has a little something extra within its pages that makes it unique.
While the book is an urban fantasy and has supernatural elements, it is at heart, a very human story. As the book unfolds, the reader discovers that the protagonist has a very complicated and painful past.
Her story is one that I felt needed to be told. I have experienced similar things in my own life. Writing this book was a chance for me to connect to readers that may have also gone through these types of hardships.
Could I hide behind the pages and act as if her story had no ties to my own past? Sure I could. But I want readers to know that I was inspired by real events. Why? Because the ability to triumph and overcome is equally as real.
And that is where true hope lies. When light overcomes darkness. When the odds seem bleak but the hero refuses to give up. Frodo taking the ring into Mordor. Katniss Everdeen volunteering as tribute. Poor Harry Potter losing people he
loves again and again...but man, he still gets up and keeps fighting.
These are the stories that speak to us. The voices that we hear when we are alone. The voices that urge us to keep going.
A similar voice spoke to me, when I was young and abandoned. C.S. Lewis. Tolkein. They were my parents when I had none. Authors raised me. And the stories they told became my family.
In the future, I will probably not add so much of myself into a book. But this time, the first time, I wanted to. Light will triumph. The darkness cannot reign forever. And yes, you can get up, despite being oh so broken, and fucking conquer.
I happily bare a little of my soul to you as you read this book. It is my greatest privilege and honor to share this story with you.
